  The West of England Cavalier Club have commissioned a booklet entitled "Homerbrent – History of a Dynasty" for release at their Molly Coaker Memorial Championship Show in August next month. Every exhibitor at the show will be given a copy as a keepsake but for anyone who hasn't entered, or won't be attending the show, you can pre-order a copy by emailing Sandra Ireland at sandra@charnell.co.uk. You can pay for them by Paypal using the above email address. The booklet is very reasonably priced at £5, and if you would like to have the book posted out to you the all in cost will be £8 to USA/Canada/Australasia, £7 to Europe, £6 to UK. For anyone not attending the show, Sandra will be at most of the UK Championship shows and will make sure she has copies with her and will also be taking a number of books to the USA in November for the York Show.  
All pre-ordered books will be sent out the week after the West of England Show on the 20th August. All profits going to The Foetal Tissue Research Project.

There were around 80 entered and this is the last Midland show at the Rugby Club which has served the Midland shows well. Next year they move the Open show back to Baginton Village Hall where the Limited show is already held. It was good to hear that Mary (Rees) was back "in charge" and wearing her Secretary's hat, after being poorly. At the time of posting, Mary is on her way to St Louis where she is judging.

THE DOGS

The Kennel Club Gallery in London houses the largest collections of canine paintings in Europe and this photographic exhibition, which will run  will run from 18th July 2011 until 13th January 2012. The Kennel Club Art Gallery is open Monday – Friday from 9.30am – 4.30pm by appointment only. Telephone 020 7518 1064 or e-mail artgallery@thekennelclub.org.uk to book an appointment. Thois exhibition will take visitors through 100 years of dog photography and explore the bond between dogs and their owners from the Victorian era into the mid 20th century. Including historical photography from Crufts, Victorian cartes des visites, cabinet cards and original glass negatives this exhibition adds meaning to the phrase Man’s Best Friend through the art of photography.

  From Queen Victoria’s prized Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named "Dash" to Victoria Beckham’s beloved Bulldog "Coco", dogs have been the number one pet of choice throughout history. Whilst some dogs hunt, herd, assist police, the military and disabled, most act as great companions for their owners. There are an estimated 400 million pet dogs worldwide.

The sun shone at Leeds show which brought out the smiles, straw hats, and strawberries and cream! Judging dogs was Ruth Mochrie (Downsbank) and the bitches were assigned to Gladys Baillie (Fyrnrose). The Dog CC and Best of Breed went to Lanola Siesta of Maibee with Reserve going to Ch Maibee Make Believe, handled on this occasion by Bill Moffat. Peakdowns Skye won the Bitch CC and Lorankas Touching Heaven took the Reserve. Montcolly Hattie won Best Puppy.

EXCITING  NEWS

  Sheena Stevens breaks the brilliant news that The Wellcome Trust are granting £400,000 for an Integrated Veterinary Training Fellowship over a period of six years. "It's a very prestigious award for one of Dr McGonnell's students. The student, Dr McGonnell, Dr Holger Volk and Dr Albert Basson of King's College, London, will be involved in studying cerebellar growth. And it's all down to those who have donated tissue. You know who you are and you know you deserve the gratitude for going that extra mile. It means we now have one fully qualified vet researching bone, and one researching the brain. Both Ph.D students. Plus we have some pretty terrific people at the RVC like Drs McGonnell and Volk and the very eminent Dr Basson at King's College. They're all enthusiastic about the work ... and they're all very grateful to breeders. It's perhaps worth pointing out that whilst this research will obviously benefit Cavaliers, it will also benefit those legions of other breeds that suffer from the condition ... and human sufferers."

On day one, the judge was Vija Kluncniece from Latvia who chose Bruno's Ch Finland, Lithuania, Estonia, Spain, BABBLER'S PICK ME (below) who not only won the CACIB, Best of Breed and Lisbon Winner Title, but also qualified for Crufts 2012. 

 

He also took Best Puppy with Chantismere Choral Fantasy.

On day two, the judge was Pietro Paolo Condo, the Italian Cavalier breeder from Italy who awarded Best of Breed to CAREEN DE LA GEODE (L) and Best Opposite to EVENING MOONLIGHT DES BEYLIAS (R)

 

    

Best Puppy was a repeat of Saturday with "Choral Fantasy" winning.

PETERBOROUGH SHOW

Results from the East of England All Breeds Ch show held at Peterborough. Winning under Ian Willey (Penemma) was Ch Maibee Make Believe who now has 27 CCs. The Reserve went to Khatibi Juan for the Road. The Bitches were judged by Victoria Foyle-Horan who found her CC winner in Ch Ellemich Aurora with the Reserve going to Fyrnrose Mrs Tiggy Winkle. Best of Breed was "Aurora" who went on to be short listed in the Toy Group. Dalvreck Dream On at Braemarra went Best Puppy. Not content with winning in the Cavalier ring with "Aurora", Michelle Chapman got the third and qualifying CC with her Mini Long Haired Daschund, Galrhia Icing on the Cake, who placed third in the Hound Group. 

 

 

 MEATY MAX

Max is a two-and-a-half-year-old Cavalier who had piled on the pounds after eating too much dog food, treats and leftovers and tipped the scales at 44lbs – more than three stone – and the struggle of coping with his increasing girth had left him with leg problems.

Owner Michael Stapleton said: ‘We’ve had him since he was a puppy and we had overfed him accidentally.We had been giving him 600g of food because we had been wrongly reading the recommended feed on food packets. He actually was supposed to be having 200g. His extra weight meant he had reduced exercise and his leg problem meant it was really a Catch 22 situation.’  

In a desperate bid to help Max lose weight and live a healthier life, the family enrolled him onto a fat-fighting diet and exercise plan. The plan – run by the PDSA Pet Aid Hospital, in Durley Avenue, Waterlooville – began in December. Within six months Max has lost 9lbs – about nine bags of sugar.

‘I’m so thrilled at the change in Max,’ added Michael. ‘Last November we literally had to force him out of the front door for walkies, and even when we did he could barely last 15 minutes around the park.Now we’re doing two, hour-and-a-half long walks a day and he loves every minute. He also enjoys playing ball in the garden and is much happier since he started losing weight.

Shane Carmichael, senior vet at the Waterlooville practice, said: ‘The transformation in Max is fantastic. He is like a different dog, in personality, body shape and health. I’m sure he’ll continue to lose weight and live a longer, happier life as a result.’

Max .....now on the way to a healthier weight. 

 

THAT TODDLIN' TOWN

If you live in the Chicago area and own a Cavalier there was a 3 day show event from June 10th -12th June 2011 worth attending. The CKCSC of Greater Chicago hosted a Specialty on the Friday, another in conjunction with the Wheaton Kennel Club All Breed Show on the Saturday and a supported entry show on the last day.  Quite a few exhibitors drove long distances. Pat and Michell Lander drove 16 hours and their reward was winning Best of Breed all three days under each judge with their CH Jayba Don Juan (below) and placing 3rd in Group Competition. Here is winning under Ted Eubank. "DJ" is now a Grand Champion.

 Email from Sheryl Skidmore "The same week that Rose Lil Jonnsen lost her girl, I heard of another 4 year old (heart clear) bitch here in the States that took a nap and didn't wake up.  

Last week I had a regular clinic appointment with a couple of my dogs and mentioned these sudden deaths to the Cardiologist, and she said she would suspect ventricular arrhythmia, similar to the problem that affects Boxers and Dobermans.  She suggested that (if possible), parents and any littermates should have a 24 hour Holter examination, which records the dog's heart activity over an extended time.  Arrhythmia's are electrical problems rather than disease of the heart muscle itself so Echo's are not useful.

 

 

CAN YOU HELP?

Can anyone help Jeanie Brauner (Sweet Dreams Cavaliers)? She saw the above as a cross stitch in a book some time ago and understands the original was an etching or a lithograph. Jeanie would like to know more if possible.  I have it on a Gallery Graphics inc greetings card but the only information I can see is  "reproduced form an original turn-of-the- century antique lithograph." Has anyone any information about the original?

SAD NEWS

  Sorry to hear that Nicky Firth (Firnick Cavaliers) has lost her dad, Bern. Both Mum, Dad and Nicky have been in the breed for a very long time and it will seem sad without his cheery smile around the show ring. Bern was a quiet, kind man who gave Nicky great support in her hobby. Our condolences to the Firth family. He will be missed by many.

THE LAST TIME I SAW PARIS....

HERE ARE THE MAIN WINNERS AT THE WORLD SHOW IN PARIS. If I have missed anyone out please let me know and I will happily correct it. The judges were Hans Boelaars from Holland, Pietro Paolo Condo from Italy and Frank Kane from the UK.There were 232 Cavaliers entered, 140 dogs less than the day before but as this was a very expensive show to enter, this may explain the drop in numbers. It was a great weekend and I hope these pictures bring back some happy moments for those who were there, and make those who didn't attend, wish they had been there! Next year the World Show is hosted by Austria. Maybe see you there!

WHAT IS THE CONVERSATION HERE BETWEEN JUDGE HANS BOELAARS AND JANE NAYLOR? Your suggestions would be appreciated!

I loved the show, it had a magical feel and the conversations taking place in so many different languages was fascinating. Just too many Cavalier rings to be able to fully appreciate all the dogs and no written critiques meant it was fast moving. So often, the FCI thorough system of reporting and grading every dog can be tedious to the spectator. So unless you sat at one ring and concentrated on that colour, it meant a frantic rush between rings to see what you were missing. Wholecolours on Day 1 was not adjacent to the other colours, so I never got to watch the black/tan and rubies which I was sorry about. Like Crufts the layout was huge but with 36,000 dogs entered, it had to be. I saw the area where hunting for truffles was going to take place but never got back to watch. I assume the pens full of ducks, geese, sheep etc were for herding displays. I did hear a few French people lamenting some of the organisation but as a spectator (apart from the horrendous amount of unattended dog s..t you had to navigate walking into the venue) I was quite happy. What was gong on behind the scenes...who knows! The food was very reasonable (unlike Crufts), lighting was good, plenty of chairs and large rings. The dogs were with their owners in their own crates and as it was unbenched,  it was difficult if you wanted to find a particular dog outside of the ring. But the exhibitors do stand in the ring in catalogue order, making life much easier for visitors who must find that aspect of our British dog shows a nightmare!. Parking seemed easy. The long wait to get our friends' dogs vetted was a bit of a pain but we went really early and avoided the queues and crowds that arrived later. All in all I think it was a success and the French Kennel Club can be proud of their extravaganza. Next year it moves to Austria. Not quite so accessible as France for UK inhabitants but having got a taste for European shows, just maybe we may make the trip.

This was held on the Saturday 9th July, in Paris and had 4 judges. Michael Forte from Ireland, Andreas Schemel from Austria, Tamas Jakkel from Hungary and Lydie Estrue from France who had a total of 376 between them and were kept very busy.  Michael did Adult blenheims, Tamas did Puppy, Veteran and Young Blenheims, Lydie did all the wholecolours and Andreas as well as doing all the Tricolours had the honour of picking Best of Breed and the final challenges. THE FRENCH CONNECTION

It seemed like the dog world and his wife had made their way to Paris for the WORLD DOG SHOW which was organosed by the French Kennel Club (SCC) and ran for 4 days from 7th -10th July 2011. Cavaliers were judged on 2 days. On the first day it was the CHAMPIONNAT DE FRANCE (held every year and is a little like Crufts)  and on day two at the WORLD SHOW (it moves countries each year and next year will be in Austria) the Cavalier exhibitors could show again, under a different set of judges. It was a great celebration of dogs and Cavaliers and their owners had travelled from far and wide to join in the competition and see top class dogs.I ran into Cavalier lovers from France, Germany, Portugal, Sweden, Netherlands, Poland, Czech Republic, Norway, Finland, Belgium, Canada, Australia, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Hungary, USA and those I rub shoulders with on a weekly basis, some UK cavalier owners who had travelled over. I took lots of photos of cavaliers, people, cavalieriana and anything else that caught my eye! Here's a start with PEOPLE IN PARIS.

From Ken Town "Thank you for putting in ChatterBox the news of "May's" passing away. A lot of people saw it and sent cards. The funeral took place this morning and there was a very good turnout. I would appreciate it if you could say "thank you"  for all the cards and messages. The support of so many gave me the strength to cope."

 

 

FANTASTIC FOUR?

Toraylac Perfect Passion ( Charnavale Perfect Touch JW x Toraylac Dido) has finished her puppy career with great success by gaining the necessary points for her Junior Warrant.

And litter brother, Toraylac Masterpiece who was recently released from quarantine in Melbourne, Australia and attended his first show with his new co-owner Lyndy Morris (Coloora), was awarded the Dog Challenge and Runnerup Best of Breed.

Not to be outdone brothers, Toraylac Mastermind and Toraylac Masterstroke owned respectively by Wioletta Matusiak in Poland and  Françoise Meyer in France have been shown a couple of occasions with excellent results.

 CLIFFORD MAKES CHAMPION

  

There is a new Champion in Cavaliers in New Zealand. CHAMPION DARILANCE ROSSER REEVES. "Clifford" who is by NZ Ch Merseyport Carter Of Darilance x NZ Ch Darilance Crystal Crackle, is owned, shown and bred by Jan Eatock from Waikato in the North Island.

 

 

HELSINKI WAS HOT

Tuusula is situated near Helsinki and the Tuusula Kennel Club held its Summer All Breeds show on 2nd July 2011 on what turned out to be one of the hottest days this Summer.  Jean Sibelius, 1865-1957, the world famous composer was inspired by the beauty of the area and had a home here. Jeanie Montford had travelled over to the UK and visited Blackpool show before flying out to Helsinki where she was judging the Cavaliers and Best in Show. The panel of judges who were doing other breeds included several Cavalier breeder/judges. Rob Sansom, Ernie Paterson, Pietro Paolo Condo, and Annukka Paloheimo who is the lynch pin of the Society whose organisation was first rate. Other UK judges were David Guy, Freda Marshall and Angela and David Cavill. My breeds were King Charles, Pomeranians, Long and Smooth Coat Chihuahuas.

Winning Best Bitch and Best of Breed was the Black/Tan, VISAKOIVUN NERISSA ARWEN. She was born on 8th November 2004 which makes her 6 years old and is out of Visakoivun Ebony Empress by Anncourt McTramp. She has the following titles CIB POHJ & FI & SE & DK & EE & LV & LT & BALT & RU & BY MVA LV JMVA LW-06 BYV-06 LTV-09.   

 

Best Dog was the Blenheim 4 year old, Lymrey Hi Moon by Timsar Mister Moonlighter out of Lymrey Hi Hopes. He also has a string of titles. CIB FE, EE, UA MVA UA GR, RU, RKF, MVA

I love my little puppy, she makes my house a home

She is my very sweetest little friend: I never feel alone.

She makes me smile;she makes me laugh; she fills my heart with love'

Did some person breed her; or did she fall from above?

 

I've never been a breeder: never seen life though their eyes;

I hold my little puppy and just sit and criticize.

I've never known their anguish; I've never felt their pain.

the caring of their charges, through snow or wind or rain.

 

I've never waited the whole night through, for babies to be born,    

The stress and trepidation when they're still not there by morn.

The weight of responsibility, for this body in my hands.

This darling little baby, who weighs but 1/2  a pound.

 

Should you do that instead of this...or maybe that was wrong?

Alone you fight and hope, one day, she'll grow up proud and strong

You pray she'll live to bring great joy to someone else's home

You know it's all just up to you: you'll fight the fight alone.

 

Formula, bottles, heating pads, you've got to get this right.

Two-hour feedings for this tiny gal, throughout the day and night

Within your heart you dread that you will surely lose this fight.

To save this little baby, but God willing...you just might.

  

Day one: she's in there fighting; you say a silent prayer.

Day two and three, she's doing well, with lots of love and care.

Day four and five ...she's still alive ; your hopes soar to the heavens.

Day six she slips away again, dies in your hands, day seven.

 

You take this little angel, and bury her alone.

with aching heart and burning tears, and an exhausted groan.

You ask yourself, "Why do this?....why suffer through this pain?"

Yet watch the joy your puppies bring, and everything's explained.

 

So, when you think of breeders, and label them with "Greed",

Think of all that they endure to fill another's need.

For when you buy your puppy, with your precious dollars part,

You only pay with money...while they pay with all their heart.

Maxine Fox Shone (Pamedna) and Mary Drewitt (Judyland) have been over in the USA judging. It looks like they had a great time, hic! I hope to put up photos of the winners in a later edition.

"Dear Norma, I have a question for you. The other week, I lost a young Cavalier girl suddenly and completely unexpected. My dogs were playing in the garden and I called them in for the night. 'Kelly' didn't come along with the others, so I went back in the garden to call for her once more. I found her lying under some bushes in the garden- dead. I had been out with my dogs at 9pm and at 10pm I called them in. 'Kelly' was still warm when I found her, so had died very recently.  None of the other dogs had any reaction to what had happened. I also have 3 friends that have lost girls in the same way,- suddenly and within minutes. But, I have never heard of any boys. You have many connections in the cavalierworld and I am wondering if others have experienced this awful thing. All I know is that in Norway all have been girls, in the prime of life. My Kelly was 3.5 years old, just checked and healthy as can be. A very active and happy little girl. The girls who belonged to my friends were 3.5 and 4 years old and the last one was 6 years old. The vets called it a stroke or a heart attack. I have made a thread on my FaceBook page and at least a couple of people there have also lost young girls this same way,- never any boys. I know it's not common at all, but I'm sitting here wondering if the girls are more vulnerable to this than the boys? Could you please ask a little around this and come back to me? The 2011 CKCS Club Puppy of The Year competition, with a “Secret” Breed Judge,  will  be taking place at Top Barn Farm, Holt Heath on the evening of Friday 19^th August 2011. The qualifying period will be from Paignton Championship Show 2010 to Leeds Championship Show 2011. Invitations will be sent out to all qualifiers following Leeds. As advertised previously, this is a ticketed event and a "scrumptious" hot & cold buffet will be provided. WINDSOR RESULTS

Dogs were judged by Pam Rayner (Trirayne) and bitches by 'all rounder' Bill Browne-Cole. Ch Maibee Make Believe won his 26th CC and Ch Lorankas Sherrie Baby won her 19th. "Make Believe" won Best of Breed. The Reserves were awarded to Sorata Don Vito and Jolainey Sugar Babe. Best Puppy was Stonepit Franco I Believe. Steve took these two photos of "HAIRY" in the Toy Group. Tanya (Ireland) looks very cool as her charge waters (sorry Shealagh, no pun intended!) the Windsor blooms! If you gotta go, you gotta go!
